Chris Graham: Hello and welcome to Hull on Estates. You’re listening to episode #211 on Tuesday, June 15, 2010.
Welcome to Hull on Estates, a series of podcasts for the Canadian legal community dealing with issues and insights surrounding estate planning in Canada. Hosted by the lawyers of Hull & Hull, the podcast will touch on some key considerations when planning estates and wills. Now, here are today’s hosts.
Craig Vander Zee: Hi and welcome to another episode of Hull on Estates. I’m Craig Vander Zee.
Chris Graham: And I’m Chris Graham.
Craig Vander Zee: And how are you, Chris?
Chris Graham: Fine thanks, Craig. Hope you’re doing well.
Craig Vander Zee: Yes. Getting into the summer, only a couple of weeks left for the kids.
Chris Graham: A couple of weeks of school for the kids.
Craig Vander Zee: No I meant a couple of weeks of school left for the kids and then the summer really begins for them. So that’s exciting of course for them and they’re all eager. But I thought today a little bit of a change of pace. And one of the things that I thought might be nice to discuss or recap really is just the OBA Trusts and Estates Year End Dinner, the Section Year End Dinner that was held on June 1st for those that might not have had the opportunity to attend and to get a recap as to the evening. And I guess to start with, there was a change of location this year and it was in the Distillery District and just a very welcoming and warm atmosphere all through the night at the Distillery District.
Chris Graham: It really was a beautiful venue, wasn’t it?
Craig Vander Zee: And the food was good. And quite apart from that, well you’re shaking your head a little bit…
Chris Graham: It was delicious.
Craig Vander Zee: The evening was really a tribute to those who had won awards with respect to various prizes and we can talk a little bit more about that in detail. But it was also an opportunity to pay tribute to the Honourable Mr. Justice Cullity who is retiring later this year. And it was an opportunity for the Bar to pay him tribute and both Tim Yudon and Ian Hull of our firm had the opportunity to speak to Mr. Justice Cullity. And contrary to what some people might have thought, it didn’t turn out to be a roast at all.
Chris Graham: And there were some very nice remarks about Rodney Hull as well. I suppose Justice Cullity’s bearing what with the leading cases and excellent legal writing and what not, it’s a little difficult to roast His Honour. And you wouldn’t really want to be around for his response.
Craig Vander Zee: No, he’s quite an eloquent speaker. So there was the tribute to Mr. Justice Cullity and then there was the Hoffstein Book Prize which was awarded to Sender Tator this year and Elena Hoffstein was the presenter with that. That was followed by the Wittlefield Award and Lionel Smith had received that award. And then it was on to the balance of the evening which was paying tribute to Hilary Laidlaw as the OBA Award of Excellence Winner in the area of Trusts and Estates.
Chris Graham: And Madam Justice Susan Greer and Bernadette Dietrich gave the bomo to Hilary and there were some very kind and very, I suppose, respectful remarks of Hilary Laidlaw’s excellence in the field.
Craig Vander Zee: And then there was a presentation for all, slide presentation which I guess was intended to be a little bit of a roast. But all of the speeches were extremely well done and it was a very nice evening. And as a part of the evening as well, quite apart from paying tribute to those who were deserving of winning awards, Suzana Popovic-Montag who is the outgoing Chair of the Section recapped what the Section had accomplished in the year and made her remarks. And then also the slate for next year’s OBA Section Executive was put to the floor and carried. And so that slate will become effectively July 1st of this year, for the 2010/2011 year.
Chris Graham: And for those of you who were unable to make it, the slate is (drum roll): Chair will be Craig Vander Zee; Vice-Chair will be Ed Esposto; Past Chair, of course, Suzana Popovic-Montag; Secretary will be Melanie Yau; Newsletter Editors will be Dina Stigas and John O’Sullivan; Advocacy and Government Relations Liaison, Continuing Legal Education Liaisons will be Joanna Ringrose and Eric Hoffstein; Regional Programming will be up to Ed Openiex and Mitchell Leitman; Members at Large are Vince DeAngelis, Susan Stamm, Susannah Roth, Jane Martin, Sender Tator, Danielle Joel, Ameena Sultan, Wendela Roberts, Deborah Petch, Ann Elise Alexander, Sean Lawler, Diane Vieira, Laura West and Shael Eisen.
Craig Vander Zee: And that’s Ann Elise Alexander, just to correct that. And as the incoming Chair, I’m looking forward to working with this year’s Section Executive and carrying on the good work that Suzana did last year and the prior Chairs before that. And we certainly hope to accomplish a lot in the upcoming year.
Chris Graham: It was a really nice evening. It’s been a good year, I think, for everybody. Not a lot of edge in the evening though. We’re definitely missing the edge of past years.
Craig Vander Zee: In last year’s year end dinner, there was a little bit of roasting that went on, which didn’t really seem to find its place in this year’s. But the speeches were certainly eloquent and very personable and just in the setting that it all took place in, just made it a really nice evening I think for all those who attended.
Chris Graham: I think that brings us to the end of this week’s discussion. Thanks for listening and thanks for joining us today. Thank you for joining me today, Craig.
Craig Vander Zee: It was certainly a pleasure, Chris and I look forward to podcasting with you again.
